Résumé

The customs register of Görlitz in Upper Lusatia survives for several years in early 17th century (1606, 1609, 1612–13, 1615–17, 1624–25), and from 1628 onward until 1830. It gives information about the merchandise traffic carried out on the Via Regia between Saxony (in particular Leipzig with its market and trade fairs), Thuringia, Bohemia and the western regions of the Holy Roman Empire with Silesia and Poland. The later years of this register were used by LUDWIG (1998) to determine both volume and seasonality of the trade with Silesia and Poland in the 18th century, and to test whether the personal union between Saxony and Poland had any economic impact. The focus in this paper is on the early years of the Görlitz customs register from before mid-17th century. These customs entries are currently being digitised and are being used to reconstruct merchandise traffic on the Via Regia immediately before and during Thirty Years' War. Since Leipzig was a hub of East-West-trade at the time, customs data from Görlitz may also be used to estimate at least part of the trade going to and from the Leipzig fairs, and to test for the impact of war on trade.
